Viasat, uAvionix Collaborate for Global UAV Communication

Our Bureau - : Apr 24, 2024 - : 3:14 am

Viasat and uAvionix have teamed up to enhance global communication services for Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), with uAvionix joining Viasat’s Velaris Partner Network.

“uAvionix successfully flew with Velaris connectivity in northern Montana. Notably, where the LTE radio had good performance on the ground before take-off, and the SkyLink C-band ISM radios had good performance while in our area of operations, the satcom let us close the gap by providing phenomenal performance with a very stable streaming connection while en route from the airport to our deployed SkyStations. It’s a huge testament to the ease of use of satcom and how supportive the Viasat team has been,” said Cyriel Kronenburg, VP of Aviation Networks at uAvionix.

“uAvionix is a highly respected and innovative avionics and software company. This partnership formalizes a number of initiatives and programs the two companies are collaborating on, and we look forward to future projects. uAvionix has a proven track record of developing cutting-edge technology for the aviation industry, and our combined expertise will lead to even more advancements in the field,” said Joel Klooster, SVP, of Flight Safety and AAM at Viasat.

The collaboration aims to develop tailored products and services for the UAV market, with uAvionix integrating Viasat’s Velaris module into their muLTElink airborne radio system. Velaris, utilizing Viasat’s global L-band network, offers secure communication for commercial UAVs and enables real-time monitoring for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations.

uAvionix’s system combines various technologies, managed by a DO-377A Link Executive Manager (LEM), and automatically registers aircraft with uAvionix’s SkyLine Cloud Managed BVLOS service.

SkyLine, a cloud-based command and control network, provides fleet management, network health monitoring, detect & avoid capabilities, and seamless roaming between radio networks and ground stations to enhance BVLOS safety.

In 2023, during system integration testing, uAvionix successfully integrated a Velaris development terminal with its SkyLine system, achieving a “very stable streaming connection” within days.
