Vietnam Shows Keen Interest in BrahMos

Jay Menon - : Dec 9, 2022 - : 1:08 am

After the Philippines, Vietnam is showing keen interest in buying the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited the BrahMos pavilion on the opening day of the ongoing Vietnam International Defence Expo 2022 and was briefed by top officials of the company, which is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya.

While the Philippines has become the first nation to which India will export the missile system, several other nations in Southeast Asia have expressed interest in buying it, including Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.

According to defence ministry sources, Vietnam is looking at procuring the BrahMos-A, which is the air-launch variant of the supersonic missile, for its Sukhoi Su-30 fighters and the land variant for coastal defence.

Earlier in the day, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam, Sandeep Arya, inaugurated the BrahMos pavilion at the expo and appreciated the the BrahMos joint venture project and conveyed his best wishes for strong India-Vietnam relations.

Vietnam is vital to India’s “Act East Policy” (AEP) that aims to build closer economic, political, military and strategic ties with countries in Southeast Asia that are grouped under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and also expand into the Southeast Asian market in the process with Indian products for export.

Earlier this year, India and the Philippines inked a US$374.96 million contract for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, making the Philippines the first Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member country to import missiles from India.
