IAG Cargo recently lifted a recording-breaking 50 tonnes of engineering equipment on a B777-300ER passenger aircraft from Mumbai. The payload, which also included perishables and pharmaceuticals, were destined for Europe and North America.
The record-breaking flight comes after the carrier completed its 200th cargo-only passenger aircraft flight out of India last month.
Following the outbreak of COVID-19 the freight division of the International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns UK flag carrier BA, Iberia Airlines, Vueling Airlines, British Midland Airways (bmi) and Aer Lingus, established a network of more than 340 scheduled cargo-only frequencies per week utilising reconfigured passenger aircraft and charter flights catering for the Indian sub-continent.
The company currently operates daily services out of Mumbai and Delhi, as well as multiple weekly flights out of Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
“Air cargo is a vital part of the business here at IAG and at the start of the pandemic, to support our customers, we were one of the first airlines to offer dedicated charter and cargo-only flights,” said Ankush Chawla, the area commercial manager for south Asia at IAG Cargo. “This milestone demonstrates our dedication to our customers, and highlights the commitment from the IAG Cargo India team on the ground.
“The achievement would not have been possible without the unconditional support from our business partners,” said Chawla. “We’ve been incredibly proud to be supporting Indian businesses during this time,” he adds.
