The first of two Fincantieri-built PPA (Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura - offshore multi-purpose patrol vessel) for the Indonesian Navy is expected to arrive in October 2024, with the second ship anticipated in April 2025, as stated by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Kementerian Pertahanan / Kemhan) on Wednesday (Apr. 17).
Following the signing of a 1.18 billion Euro contract between Kemhan and Fincantieri last month, the Italian shipbuilder will transfer two PPA ships to Indonesia. Also known as the Thaon di Revel class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and originally intended for the Italian Navy, the vessels marked for transfer are the Marcantonio Colonna (P433)—launched in 2022—and the Ruggiero di Lauria (P435), which was launched in 2023.
With a length of 143 metres, a beam of 16.5 metres, and a displacement of around 6,250 tonnes, each PPA is armed with a 127 mm-calibre main naval gun, one 76 mm plus two 25 mm cannons, as well as assorted missiles for anti-aircraft and anti-ship/land attack purposes. Each ship can accommodate and operate two medium-sized helicopters for anti-submarine warfare and transport.
Powered by a combination of a 32,000 kW (43,000 hp) gas turbine and two 10,000 kW (13,000 hp) diesel engines, they can reach a maximum speed of over 31 knots and a maximum range of 9,300 km (5,000 nm) at a cruising speed of 15 knots. Each ship has a crew complement of between 90 to 120 personnel, depending on configuration.
The two PPA ships are poised to become the Indonesian Navy's largest and most advanced modern surface combatants until the contract activation for six Fincantieri’s Bergamini-class/FREMM frigates. This is expected to commence under the next Indonesian administration, also beginning in October this year.
In addition to Fincantieri-built ships, the Indonesian Navy is currently constructing two FMP (Frigat Merah-Putih / red-white frigate) ships based on Babcock’s Arrowhead 140 design at the state-owned shipyard PT PAL’s facility. Together with the Italian-made warships, it is anticipated that by the completion of these two FMP frigates in 2029, the service will rank among the most formidable navies in the Southeast Asia region.
