Indra, Navantia to Equip Spanish Navy with Advanced IFF Systems

Our Bureau - : May 31, 2024 - : 9:42 pm

Indra and Navantia have collaborated to install an Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF) system on a first ship designated for export and plan to extend this system to the entire Spanish Navy fleet.

The IFF system, along with Indra’s electronic defence, radar, and communication systems, is integral to the combat systems of military vessels, playing a critical role in mission success.

The system’s function is to interrogate nearby platforms, which respond with an encrypted signal to determine their status as allies or potential threats. It continuously evolves to counter new, complex threats and prevent signal tampering by adversaries.

NATO’s latest enhancement to the IFF system is the STANAG standard edition 3 for mode 5, the most advanced interrogation mode. This update is mandatory for NATO allies and other navies that cooperate with NATO countries, making it essential for international mission participation. Indra is one of the few companies outside the U.S. with this capability and is implementing it on various international vessels.

Indra is also pursuing certification from the AIMS office of the U.S. Department of Defence to ensure its systems meet the required standards. The identification system includes design improvements for future adaptability through software reconfiguration, which reduces costs and enhances fleet operability and maintenance.

Indra has been developing and implementing advanced systems for the Spanish Navy and other navies, including those of Germany, Norway, Italy, India, South Korea, and Mexico for more than 30 years. The company has partnered with leading shipyards such as Navantia, Italy’s Fincantieri, Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Holland’s Damen. Indra’s IFF systems are used on naval, air, and land platforms worldwide.
