Indonesian state-owned land systems defence company, PT PINDAD, has announced plans to develop a lighter version of the Harimau (Tiger) tank. This revelation was made during the recently concluded Eurosatory 2024 event in Paris, France, where the company also unveiled a long-term collaboration with Belgium’s John Cockerill Defense (JCD).
Born as a result of a collaboration between PINDAD and Turkiye's FNSS, 18 Harimau tanks with JCD’s C3105 turrets have been produced and ten have been handed over to the Indonesian Army (TNI AD). The Belgian company’s turrets armed with 90 mm cannons have also been installed in PINDAD’s Badak (Rhino) 6x6 Fire Support Vehicle (FSV), of which 14 have been produced and delivered to TNI AD.
The recently announced collaboration with JCD includes a Transfer of Technology (ToT) and assistance agreement to enable the Indonesian company to develop its own turret version. Furthermore, PINDAD also indicated that JCD would assist in creating a lighter variant of the Harimau tank.
Although some speculate that this project could lead to the development of a 20-ton variant for air transport via C-130H/J Hercules aircraft, this would necessitate a substantial redesign due to the Harimau tank’s typical weight of 30-35 tons. This would also entail a significantly longer development period and potential cost overruns.
Therefore, the project is more likely aimed at developing and producing an Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) version, armed with an autocannon in the range of 20 mm to 40 mm calibre, instead of a high-pressure 105 mm gun.
Further details and specifications of the project are expected to be released in the coming months.
