Indonesia’s First A400M Enters Final Assembly

Our Bureau - : Jan 20, 2025 - : 9:01 pm

The first Airbus A400M aircraft for the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) has entered the Final Assembly Line in Seville, Spain. This marks a significant step towards its scheduled delivery by the end of 2025.

During this stage of assembly, major components have been integrated. The Horizontal Tail Plane (HTP) was attached to the Vertical Tail Plane (VTP), and the wings were connected to the fuselage. The aircraft, identified as MSN148, will next undergo power plant and software installation, followed by functional testing before its first engine run.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence ordered two A400M aircraft in 2021. These aircraft, in the Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) configuration, are designed to enhance operational flexibility. They can be configured for various roles, including transport, aerial refuelling, humanitarian aid, and medical evacuation. The TNI-AU plans to replace its aging KC-130B tankers, in service since the early 1960s, with these new aircraft.

At the time of the agreement, the Ministry also signed a Letter of Intent to potentially acquire four additional A400M aircraft in the future.

The A400M, known as the "Atlas," is a versatile military transport aircraft powered by four Europrop TP400-D6 turboprop engines, each generating 8,200 kW. It has a maximum speed of Mach 0.72, an economical cruise speed of 781 km/h, and a range of 3,300 km at full load. The aircraft can carry 116 fully equipped troops or up to 37,000 kg of cargo and has a service ceiling of 40,000 feet.

Since its introduction in 2013, over 130 A400Ms have been delivered to nine countries, amassing more than 200,000 flight hours. Indonesia is the second Southeast Asian nation, following Malaysia, to operate the A400M.
