American Announces Order for 47 Boeing 787s

: Apr 7, 2018 - : 2:43 am

American Airlines has placed a new order for 47 new Boeing 787s. This list price value of the deal is worth US$12.3 billion.

The deal comes as a blow to Airbus, as the airline cancelled an order for 22 of Airbus’ twin-aisle A350 jets, a purchase placed earlier.

The Dreamliner deal marks the second time this year that Boeing has persuaded an Airbus widebody customer in the U.S. to switch to the 787. Hawaiian Airlines, the sole customer for Airbus’ A330-800, decided last month to order 10 Dreamliners instead.

“This was a difficult decision between the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 and A330neo and we thank both manufacturers for their aggressive efforts to earn more of American’s business. In the end, our goal to simplify our fleet made the 787 a more compelling choice,” American Airlines President Robert Isom said in a statement.

The new order will more than double the airline’s Dreamliner fleet and is expected to lead to the removal of aging Boeing 767s from its fleet. As part of the deal, American and Boeing have reached an agreement to defer the delivery of 40 737 narrow-body jets previously scheduled to arrive between 2020 and 2022 to “better align with planned retirements of other narrow-body aircraft.”

The order includes 22 787-8s and 25 787-9s in total, all with GE engines.

“We are extremely honored that American Airlines is deepening its commitment to the 787 Dreamliner. This new order is a powerful endorsement of the 787 family’s unique passenger appeal and unmatched ability to help airlines open new routes and grow profitably,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister.

American becomes the latest airline to place a repeat order for the 787 Dreamliner. More than half of the program’s 71 customers have done so, which has helped the 787 program achieve more than 1,350 orders to date.

“We are showing again and again that the 787 Dreamliner is the champion in its class. The airplane’s tremendous value proposition explains why it has become the fastest selling twin-aisle jet in history,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales & Marketing for The Boeing Company. “And when we match the Dreamliner with Boeing’s suite of services, it is a combination that delivers unbeatable value for our customers.”
