Emirates Introduces SAF on Amsterdam Schiphol Flights

Our Bureau - : Mar 27, 2024 - : 6:12 pm

Emirates has commenced its Neste fuel agreement at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport this month, with over 2 million gallons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to be supplied throughout 2024.

The airline will monitor SAF delivery and its environmental impact using industry-standard methods. This collaboration with Neste, announced last year, represents a significant SAF procurement for Emirates.

Once fully integrated, the blended SAF at Schiphol will comprise over 700,000 gallons of neat SAF. Collaboration with Neste will soon extend to Singapore Changi Airport.

Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer of Emirates said: “Collaborating with committed partners like Neste is one of the practical steps we are taking to reduce our emissions, and it’s an all-important milestone in our own sustainability journey as an airline. Strong partnerships like this, especially at major air transport hubs such as Amsterdam, lay the foundation for how we can work with partners and airports to increase access to and availability of SAF across our network.”

Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Renewable Aviation, Neste said: “We are proud to support Emirates in their sustainability journey. SAF is an available solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from air travel and it is exciting that Emirates has started using our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. It is also a great example of how we are working together with partners to accelerate SAF usage and are looking forward to the next steps of our cooperation.”

Earlier this year, the airline joined the Solent Cluster in the UK, aiming to establish a SAF plant capable of producing up to 200,000 tonnes per year by 2032.

The airline actively participates in various industry and government working groups to scale SAF production. Alongside the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), it contributes to the UAE’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap, with ambitions to produce 700 million litres of SAF by 2030.

Emirates is a founding member of the UAE research consortium Air-CRAFT, collaborating across various sectors to develop and scale SAF technologies.
