European Consortium Launches SAAT Project

The official launch of the Small Arms Ammunition Technologies (SAAT) project has been announced. Coordinated by FN Herstal, this four-year initiative is backed by a European consortium comprising defence companies, research organisations, and Ministries of Defence from nine countries. The project’s primary goal is to establish a common standard for small arms ammunition across Europe, aiming to improve interoperability and bolster European defence autonomy.

A kick-off meeting took place in mid-December at FN Herstal’s headquarters, where representatives from Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland discussed the governance and structure of the project.

The SAAT project aims to define the requirements for small arms ammunition to meet both current and future threats, while also evaluating the state of the art in small arms ammunition technologies. This includes examining components such as projectiles, propellants, cartridge cases, and their interaction with weapons. Additionally, the project will focus on the development of an optimised prototype for small arms projectiles and contribute to the improvement of ammunition component technologies.

With a budget of €8.3 million, the project brings together 18 partners, including large manufacturers, SMEs, research institutes, and national defence bodies. Notable industry participants include Beretta (Italy), CZUB (Czech Republic), Eurenco (Belgium and Sweden), Fiocchi Munizioni (Italy), FN Herstal (Belgium, acting as project coordinator), Mesko (Poland), Nammo (Norway and Sweden), Nobel Sport (France), and Swiss P Defence (Switzerland). The research consortium consists of organisations such as Armasuisse (Switzerland), DGA Techniques Terrestres (France), FFI (Norway), FOI (Sweden), the Royal Military Academy of Belgium (RMA), TNO (The Netherlands), and WAT (Military University of Technology, Poland).

This diverse collaboration highlights Europe's dedication to advancing innovation and cooperation in the military small arms and ammunition sector.

“This kick-off meeting is the first step in an ambitious journey to develop innovative ammunition solutions for Europe’s defence forces,” said Jonas Granberg, Project Officer Ammunition Technology at European Defence Agency (EDA). “By bringing together expertise from across Europe, SAAT will deliver practical, effective, and forward-looking solutions that address today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.”
