FAA Inspections Continue Even as Boeing Delivers First 787 in Months

: Mar 30, 2021 - : 10:02 am

Boeing has recommenced deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner jet, delivering the first of the type since October, to United Airlines.

The airline received a new 787-9 last Friday and took another one on Monday, a spokeswoman for the airline said. The airline has 61 of the type and intends to take an additional ten this year.

The plane maker continues to look at the production defects that have kept dozens of the aircraft on the ground. The delivered jet was one of four that have been inspected by the FAA which last week had said it would handle pre-delivery checks on the 787 Dreamliner aircraft. More than 80 Dreamliners are in storage.

In September last year, Boeing had grounded eight 787 Dreamliners after finding two manufacturing flaws that could compromise the jet’s structural integrity.

“Today, we resumed 787 deliveries following several months of rigorous engineering analysis, inspection and as-needed rework to ensure that every airplane we deliver meets all regulatory requirements,” Lane Ballard, who heads the Chicago-based company’s Dreamliner program, said in a message to employees Friday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said late Thursday that it cleared two of the four planes on which it had conducted a special review. It hadn’t completed the checks of the other two that are required for the agency to issue airworthiness certificates. The agency typically would have delegated those final inspections to Boeing employees.

The grounding of the Dreamliners added to Boeing’s financial struggles ; the company had been hit earlier by the COVID-19 pandemic and a 20-month grounding of its 737 MAX jet.
