Fifty Confirmed Dead In Philippine Air Force C-130 Crash

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jul 5, 2021 - : 11:52 pm

Forty seven  troops and three civilians are confirmed dead in an accident involving a C-130H Hercules transport aircraft of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) that crashed in Patikul, Sulu, about 950 km South of the capital, Manila on July 4.

The Lockheed Martin-built plane “missed the runway trying to regain power,” according to General Cirilito Elola Sobejana, chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Forty nine military personnel, including the plane’s three pilots, and four civilians were also injured in the crash. Most of them are currently being treated in the hospital closest to the crash site while the most seriously injured were promptly transferred to the Zamboanga city hospital, an hour’s flight from the location. The plane was carrying 96 troops, three pilots and five air crew onboard. The troops were meant to be deployed as reinforcement to fight against the Abu Sayyaf militant group in the country’s Southern region.

“The aircraft was in tip-top shape. ” said AFP spokesman Major General Edgard Arevalo said in a press conference on Monday, July 5. “It is not brand new, but it is in very good condition. It still had around 11,000 flying hours remaining before its next maintenance,” he added.

Arevalo said that the AFP would conduct an “transparent investigation” following rescue and treatment efforts but added that matters of national security will be kept confidential.

The accident has put the PAF in the spotlight especially since it happened less than two weeks after the fatal crash of a S70i Black Hawk helicopter in Tarlac province on June 23. That crash killed all six onboard. The PAF is conducting an investigation by grounding the rest of its S-70i helicopters.

The Philippine Air Forces currently only have one operational C-130 Hercules. That will be grounded pending investigation. There are also two other C-130s still in maintenance overseas and another refurbished one from the United States that has not been delivered yet.
