Italian shipbuilding conglomerate Fincantieri has announced the award of a contract from the Ministry of Defense of Indonesia, for the supply of 6 FREMM Warships andĀ the modernization and sale of 2 MaestraleĀ Class Frigates, and the related logistical support.
Fincantieri has overcome competition from Dutch shipbuilder Damen, Japan’s Japanese Mitsui and a consortium led by Babcock.
The 2 Maestrale Class Frigates will be acquired by Fincantieri from the Italian Navy once they are decommissioned.
The shipbuilder will then modernize both warships in Italy to meet Indonesian requirements.
āThe acquisition of an order of this magnitude allows Fincantieri to also assume global leadership in the surface ships sector, and is the confirmation of the technological leadership of a project once again considered the most innovative on the market which led to 20 ships for several foreign Navies, between orders and options. This program has an extraordinary strategic importance, both for the economic return for our Country and for the Italian defense supply chain, and because it ensures Fincantieriās strong positioning in the area, paving the way for the finalization of further important negotiations for other programs already in progress also in the civil sector,” saidĀ Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri.
The recent agreement is of the utmost importance to strengthen the collaboration between two Countries in a strategic area of the Pacific, Fincantieri said in a release.
Fincantieri will be prime contractor for the entire programme and the construction of the frigates will generate substantial employment not only for several Italian shipyards of the Group in the next years, but also for other companies in the sector, namely Leonardo, as well as numerous small and medium-sized national companies, and will see the collaboration of the local PT-PAL shipyard (Java island).
A joint Italian-French Defense industrial co-operation project for a new generation of Frigates; FREMMĀ Warships have a common baseline, but differ from country to country to meet different operational requirements.
The frigates for the Italian Navy are built at the Fincantieriās integrated naval shipyard of Riva Trigoso-Muggiano.
The ships have a full load displacement of about 6,500 tons, an overall length of about 144 metres and a top speed exceeding 27 knots.
