Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MIDHANI at the ongoing airshow for development and production of composite raw materials.
R Madhavan, CMD (HAL) said that composites are one area where HAL will collaborate.
The state owned airframer has a large requirement for composites raw materials, mainly in the form of prepregs used in platforms like LCA, ALH, LCH and LUH, which are currently imported.
The MoU with HAL is a major step forward in the area of composite materials, said S K Jha, CMD, MIDHANI.
There is no equivalent proven Indian approved/qualified supplier for various types of Prepregs (Carbon, Aramid, Glass types etc.) for the Aircraft applications.
With a drive to increase indigenisation in defence production, HAL is striving to reduce its dependency on foreign OEMs.
Company officials say that usage of composites within the company is going to continue to increase, particularly for HAL’s fighter aircraft and helicopters due to their inherent advantages over metallic raw materials.
Requirements for supply of raw materials for composite also exist for other Aerospace and Defense programs including those of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO), and National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL).
