India’s Bharat Dynamic Limited (BDL) has inked a contract worth 30 billion rupees ( $475 million) with the defense ministry for supplying Invar anti-tank guided missiles to the Indian army.
“The deliveries are expected to be completed over the next five years,” a defense ministry spokesman says.
In 2011, India had approved the purchase of 25,000 Invar missiles for T-90 tanks, which India has in its army.
Under the decision, the country decided to procure 10,000 Invar missiles from Russian manufacturers and the remaining 15,000 missiles to be produced by the BDL under licensed transfer of technology (ToT).
Indian government also had approved the purchase of 10,000 Konkurs-M anti-tank guided missiles from Russia.
Invar is a laser beam rider Anti Tank Guided Missile capable of being fired from T-90 tank. It’s a derivative of NATO AT-11B Sniper. The gun-launched Invar missiles shall be deployed on T-90 main battle tanks of the army and are fired from the 125 mm barrel of a gun. The missile has a range of five kilometer.
The missile can neutralize adversaries tanks fitted with explosive reactive armour protection.
BDL has been manufacturing these missiles under technical collaboration with Rosoboronexport of Russia.
BDL, the prime production agency for missiles, started its operations with the production of the first generation anti-tank guided missile — the French SS11B1, under a licence agreement with Aerospatiale in that country.
Following this, BDL got into production of second generation ATGMs — the French Milan-2 and the Russian Konkurs. These projects were taken up for license production with technical collaboration from Euromissile, France and KBP, Russia respectively.
