Indonesia To Buy Additional Missiles, GCI Radars

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Aug 4, 2021 - : 9:24 am

The Indonesian Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) has approved a US$5.8 billion foreign loan in the current 2021 financial year for the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Kemhan).

The loan will be used to finance 31 different programs related to procurement and upgrades for all three services within the TNI. According to sources, funds have been allocated to acquire additional short range R-73 (NATO code: AA-11 Archer) and medium range R-27 (AA-10 Alamo) air-to-air missiles, likely from Ukraine, for the Indonesian Air Force’s fleet of Su-27 and Su-30 jet fighters. These two procurement programs have received allocations of US$15.7 million and US$36 million respectively.

US$750 million has been set aside to purchase Ground-Controlled Interception (CGI) radar systems while S$540 million has been allocated for what seems to be a number of medium-range air defence missile systems. It is currently unknown which country will provide the GCI radar systems. Norway’s Kongsberg and US’ Raytheon joint project NASAMS 2 has been hinted as the likely candidate for the latter.
