One TPS-P14ME Mobile Air Surveillance Radar System from Japan was officially handed over to the Philippines Air Force (PAF). The Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND) Gilberto Teodoro Jr., accepted the handover from Japanese State Minister of Defense Oniki Makoto at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, on Monday (Apr. 29).

“These are Armed Forces radars, we will integrate them within our system and we will devise a method where we can operate with them when necessary,” Teodoro said during the event. “It adds our scope of domain awareness, particularly in the aerial domain.”

“The TPS-P14ME Mobile Air Surveillance Radar System significantly enhances the PAF’s operational capabilities by providing real-time situational awareness, early warning detection, and precise target tracking capabilities,” said Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo, PAF spokesperson

The system is part of a Php 5.5 billion (USD 98.7 million) deal between the Philippines and the Japanese government with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) signed in 2020. The deal includes one mobile radar and three fixed FPS-3ME air surveillance radar systems, one of the latter has already been delivered and installed in December 2023.

According to MELCO, the TPS-P14ME is a “mobile-type long-range air surveillance radar offering precise detection and tracking of multiple aerial targets.” The mobile system was developed from the J/TPS-P14 operated by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and claimed to be reliable in a wide range of operating environments and conditions.

The radar works in S-band frequency and has an instrumented range of more than 460 km.

PAF’s 580th Aircraft Control and Warning Wing has been assigned to operate and maintain the new TPS-P14ME mobile radar.
