At the Euronaval 2024 exhibition in Paris, KNDS France is presenting several of its latest naval defence solutions, including the RAPIDFire and Narwhal systems, alongside a collaborative launcher project. The company aims to enhance naval security capabilities for a range of modern threats.
KNDS France’s RAPIDFire system serves as the main artillery of the French Navy’s new force supply vessel, Jacques Chevallier. After completing a year-long deployment, the system underwent a series of live-fire tests. Designed to counter close-range threats from both surface and airborne sources, RAPIDFire combines a 40 mm gun with Thales optronic technology and 40 mm telescoped ammunition developed by CTAI, a subsidiary of KNDS.
The RAPIDFire system can fire up to 140 rounds, allowing for approximately 30 interceptions before a reload is needed. The system can adjust its targeting after each shot, adapting to moving threats. It is capable of intercepting various threats, including light aircraft and missiles, within a range of 4 km. Additionally, its compatibility with airburst ammunition may enhance its effectiveness for anti-air operations.
The French procurement agency DGA has ordered 14 RAPIDFire units to equip several vessels in the French Navy. Two units are currently operational, with two more expected to be deployed by mid-2025.
Alongside RAPIDFire, KNDS France is displaying the Narwhal, a 20 mm remote-controlled turret used on both patrol and larger vessels, such as frigates. With over 180 units currently in service across various naval fleets, the Narwhal system is expected to evolve to integrate a 30 mm cannon, which could enhance its capabilities in addressing drone threats.
KNDS France is collaborating with Naval Group on the LMP (Multi-purpose Modular Launcher), a defence system intended for close-range protection of naval vessels. KNDS is working on integrating advanced ammunition to improve the launcher’s effectiveness against modern threats, such as aerial and surface drones.
KNDS France, along with its subsidiaries KNDS Ammo France and KNDS Ammo Italy, provides naval ammunition ranging from 20 mm to 127 mm to more than 60 military clients worldwide. The company is showcasing this range of ammunition at Euronaval, underscoring its focus on delivering reliable solutions for various naval defence applications.
