Malaysian Army Invites Caesar for Trials

: Apr 16, 2018 - : 9:19 pm

Nexter Systems Caesar 6X6 wheeled self-propelled gun will arrive in July for in-country firing trials for the versatile and battle proven artillery system. While there is no budget for the acquisition of the artillery pieces, the decision to invite Nexter to perform trials with Caesar is significant considering that Indonesia and Thailand already operate it.

In addition to existing operators of the Caesar, such as Thailand which has six systems and could have a requirement for as many as 18 (to make up a full regiment) and Indonesia which has 19 artillery pieces, Vietnam is also being considered as a potential customer for the self-propelled gun. “The 155mm/52 Cal. Caesar artillery system has been proposed by Nexter Systems to cater to the requirements of the Malaysian Army. We will be displaying the Caesar in front of the Chief of Army and will conduct live mobility and firing trials in July for three weeks.’

“We are confident in the reliability and performance of Caesar, so a single unit will perform the demonstrations over the entire duration,” Jean-Michel Domitrovic, Executive Vice President International Business for Asia, tells Daily News.

The Caesar 6X6 offers a high mobility artillery platform that can be deployed regardless of environment and can be deployed in nearly any weather condition. It can also be used as a quickly deployed coastal artillery system because of its high accuracy cannon and can be a useful force multiplier in such deployments.

While a C-130 air-lifter can carry an entire Caesar gun system; the entire gun, support infrastructure for deployment, ammunition and spares can be carried on the larger A-400M for immediate deployment even in far-flung areas. Globally, the Caesar artillery system is also complimented by Nexter’s 105 LG1 gun which can be towed by a light vehicle, transported by an average helicopter (PUMA or Bell 212 type) or parachuted by a tactical transport aircraft such as the C130-Hercules.
The combination of these two weapons systems offer both tactical and strategic utility to any potential user.

The SE-Asian customers for the 105 LG1 gun are Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.
