PT DRU Starts Building Two OPV For Indonesian Navy

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Aug 27, 2021 - : 1:33 am

PT DRU (Daya Radar Utama) on Thursday started the construction of two ships in the Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) class for the Indonesian Navy in the company’s shipyard in Bandar Lampung, Lampung province.

The ships are a part of the Indonesian Navy’s US$340 million OPV acquisition project. Completion of the ships is expected in the first half of 2022.

According to sources, the two ships are likely to have different specifications. The first one will be a 90 meter long vessel based on PT DRU’s own design. On the other hand, although the second ship also has a length of about 90 meters, PT DRU might end up providing a different design to it.

Based on the render from PT DRU’s promotional video, the 90 meter OPV with an approximate displacement of 1,900 tonnes is designed to be armed with 8 MM-40 Exocet anti-ship missiles in 2 x 4 launchers arrangement. It is also designed to be armed with a 76 mm caliber naval gun as well as a Close In Weapon System (CIWS) in the form of the 35 mm caliber Millenium Gun, and mount points for four manually operated 12.7 mm heavy machine guns or four 20 mm caliber cannons.

PT DRU’s 90 meters OPV is also designed to operate a helicopter with the inclusion of a helipad and a hangar to store an AS-665 Panther or similarly sized helicopter operated by the Indonesian Navy. The ship will have two loading ramps on its aft for two Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) to be used for troop insertion or rescue.

The ship will be powered by four 7280 KW diesel engines. This OPV 90 will have a maximum speed of 28 knots with a cruising speed of 20 knots, and will be crewed by 70 personnel with additional 24 troops onboard.

PT DRU is an Indonesian privately-owned company in the shipbuilding industry. Since its establishment in 1972, the company has produced numerous ships ranging from tug boats to ferries with up to 5,000 tonnes displacement. In the defence sector, the company has also built numerous patrol boats as well as designed and built the 2,300 tonnes displacement Teluk Bintuni-class Landing Ship Tank (LST) for the Indonesian Navy.
