Qantas to Retire its 747 Fleet Earlier Than Planned

: May 3, 2018 - : 3:47 am

After Delta, United and Cathay Pacific having retired their Boeing 747 over the last year and a half, Australia’s Qantas Airlines said it would join other airlines in permanently landing the last of its jumbo jets.

According to report, the airline had originally planned to phase out its 747s by 2022. However, Qantas said that it will retire its last 10 747-400s by 2020. This will be largely replaced with six additional orders for the Boeing 787-9. The airline said that although the Dreamliners carry only about two-thirds as many passengers as 747s, they can fly longer distances and are more fuel efficient. The airline started flying its existing fleet of four Dreamliners between London and Perth in March this year.

The airline has been using 747s, the original jumbo jetliner, since 1971. The first of the airline’s last 747s will leave the fleet this July with the rest following gradually over the next two years.

“This really is the end of one era and the start of another,” Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said in a statement. “The jumbo has been the backbone of Qantas International for more than 40 years and we’ve flown almost every type that Boeing built.”

There are currently 175 passenger 747s still in service around the world, according to a FlightGlobal report. Although vast majority of them are scheduled for retirement over the next few years, the report suggests that the newer models could remain in the skies for another 20 years.
