Rheinmetall has secured a major contract to advance the digitalisation of the Bundeswehr’s communication infrastructure. The company, through its subsidiary Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH, has been selected as the prime contractor to establish the Tactical Wide Area Network for Land-Based Operations (TaWAN LBO). This large-scale project, with a value of several billion Euros, will focus on creating an integrated communication network to support the Bundeswehr’s operations.
The framework contract, which spans ten years, was signed by Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH and representatives from the Federal Office for the Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw). An initial order worth €1.88bn has been placed under the framework for the provision of the communication system, aimed at equipping a Bundeswehr division. Deliveries are scheduled between the end of 2026 and the end of 2029.
Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the company, noting that the contract would enable synchronized coordination between the TaWAN LBO and the previously awarded Digitalised Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) systems. He added, "It is our ambition to provide the Bundeswehr with a seamless and reliable communication network within the given timeframe – one which can be considered a flagship of digitalisation in Germany.”
The TaWAN LBO system will provide an open transport network for Federated Mission Networking (FMN) based on a Protected Core Network (PCN). It will connect forward tactical D-LBO networks with the rear-echelon core network CIR, ensuring high-speed connectivity deep into the rear area. This project is part of the Bundeswehr's broader Digitalised Land-Based Operations programme, marking a significant step in enhancing the armed forces’ command capabilities.
In addition to the communication network, Rheinmetall will also supply 102 protected 8x8 HX trucks from its subsidiary Rheinmetall MAN. These vehicles will serve as platforms for the directional radio systems, featuring mobile high extendable antenna masts. The vehicles will also carry functional containers equipped with workstations, servers, and other essential equipment.
The TaWAN LBO project will also involve smaller vehicle platforms used with mobile antenna masts and a software-based directional radio management system. This system will support the functionality of the directional radio network and facilitate the planning and execution of operations.
