Two More T129B ATAK Helicopters Arrive in The Philippines

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Nov 25, 2022 - : 4:11 pm

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) received a second batch delivery of two T129B ATAK attack helicopters at Clark Air Base, Manila on Thursday (Nov. 24). The delivery was made using two Turkish Air Force’s Airbus A400M Atlas heavy lifter aircraft from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) facility at Ankara.

These helicopters are part of a PHP13.8 billion (about USD265 million) contract for six T129B ATAK helicopters signed in July 2020 between the Philippines Department of National Defense (DND) and Turkish Aerospace Industries. The first batch delivery was originally planned to be made by the end of 2021, but issues regarding the export license of their US-made engines have delayed their delivery date.

The first two T129B ATAK helicopters were finally delivered to the Philippines in March this year. It is now expected that the final delivery of the fifth and sixth T129B attack helicopters for PAF to be made in the first half of 2023.

TAI T129B ATAK is a twin turboshaft engine, tandem-seat, all-weather attack helicopter developed from AgustaWestland A129 Mangusta. Powered with two LHTEC CTS800-4A turboshafts, each delivering 1,014 kW (1,360 hp) of power, the rotorcraft is capable of reaching a maximum cruise speed of 281 km/h with a 537 km operational range. It is armed with an M197 triple-barrel 20 mm rotary cannon as standard and has four hardpoints under its stub wings for a multitude of armament, ranging from rockets, anti-tank/air to ground as well as air to air missiles.
