Smiths Detection, a leader in threat detection and screening technologies for aviation, ports and borders, urban security and defence markets, announced that it and distribution partner Donggok Precision Co., Ltd. were jointly awarded a c. USD 7 million contract from Korea Airport Corporation (KAC), to supply Jeju International Airport comprising five units each of HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, iLane.evo and IONSCAN 600, as well as Smiths Detection’s Checkpoint Management Software and Checkpoint Evo Plus.
Jeju International Airport is the first airport to install HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, Smiths Detection’s latest Computed Tomography (CT)-based cabin baggage screening system, which was launched in November last year.
“With the growing number of travellers passing through Jeju International Airport and the need to adhere to stricter security standards, KAC was looking for a cutting-edge checkpoint solution with advanced design, effectiveness, and high throughput. As a long-standing distributor and partner of Smiths Detection in Korea, we were able confidently to vouch for their innovative solutions and expertise. We look forward to working with both Smiths Detection and KAC to improve the airport’s security checkpoint operations and ensure passenger satisfaction at every step of their journey,” said Lee Kwang Sun, Chairman, Donggok Precision Co., Ltd.
The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX cabin bagging screening system utilises CT technology to provide the highest level of security while improving passenger throughput and lowering overall costs for airports. iLane.evo is an effective tray handling system, designed to remove bottlenecks to deliver a steady flow of trays; and IONSCAN 600 is a portable explosives trace detector that can accurately detect and identify a wide range of explosives in under eight seconds. Together, the three systems will further streamline operations and the screening process to reduce wait time for passengers at the security checkpoint.
“We are extremely honoured that Korea Airport Corporation has partnered with Smiths Detection. This win is the best validation of our products and expertise in the area of aviation security,” said John Tan, Managing Director – Asia Region, Smiths Detection. “Asia is also seeing significant growth in travel and tourism, and airports in the region are increasingly turning to technology to create a safe and pleasant experience for passengers. This deployment at Jeju International Airport is an important milestone for us as we further expand our footprint in Asia Pacific.”
The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, iLane.evo, IONSCAN 600, as well as Smiths Detection Checkpoint Management Software and Checkpoint Evo Plus will be deployed at Jeju International Airport by the end of the year.
