PCG to Acquire Five Additional MRRVs From Japan

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Apr 27, 2024 - : 8:39 am

The Philippines Coast Guard (PCG) is set to acquire an additional five Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs) from Japan. These vessels are expected to be in the same class as two Teresa Magbanua-class patrol vessels constructed in Japan in 2021 and handed over to the agency in 2022.

Within the scope of the third phase of the Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project (MSCIP III) of the PCG, the acquisition plan received approval from the country’s National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) on 9th November 2023. The Php 24,574 billion (approx. USD 426.3 million) project is funded by a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) Official Development Assistance (ODA).

Under the previous MSCIP II project, the PCG acquired the BRP Teresa Magbanua (9701) and BRP Melchora Aquino (9702) built by Japan’s Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. They were officially commissioned into the agency’s active service on 6th May and 12th June 2022, respectively.

The Teresa Magbanua-class MRRV was developed based on the Japan Coast Guard’s 94-metre Kunigami-class OPV. Each MRRV has a length of 97 metres, an 11-metre beam, and a displacement of around 1700 tons. Powered with two 6,600 KW diesel engines that enable them to have a maximum speed of 24 knots, the ships can reach a maximum range of about 7,400 km (4,000 nautical miles) under a cruising speed of 19 knots.
