The recent series of tests of the Israeli Arrow-3 ballistic missile interceptor were made in scenarios depicting the threats posed by the new ballistic missiles that Iran has developed.
The Israeli most advanced ballistic missiles interceptor, the Arrow-3, has completed a ten-day series of tests in Alaska, in which it intercepted by hard kill, three targets simulating ballistic missiles in different trajectory scenarios.
The very complex series of tests was performed jointly by the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO), in the Israel Ministry of Defense, together with the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
The Arrow 3 weapon system developed by Israel aerospace industries (IAI) is designed to intercept expo-atmospheric ballistic missiles.
During the tests, the US AN-TPY2 radar was used and operational interoperability was validated successfully. The flight tests were conducted in the pacific spaceport complex in Kodiak, Alaska. This in order to test capabilities that may not be tested in Israel, because of the size of the country and its location.
A US AN-TPY2 radar is based in Israel permanently operated by American servicemen.
The ballistic missile were simulated by targets of the Sparrow family developed by Rafael and launched from an Israel airforce fighter aircraft. In past tests the Silver Sparrow, the most advanced version was launched from F-15.
“Boaz Levi IAI EVP& GM of its missiles and space group, said that the mission of the three intercept tests was achieved fully “we tested all the Arrow 3 subsystems and the three interceptors acquired the targets and achieved hit to kill intercepts”.
The primary contractor for the development of the Arrow Weapon System interceptor is the MLM division of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
Israeli sources said the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 will be used according to the type of the ballistic missile that will be launched against Israel
The Arrow 3 Weapon System is a major component of Israel’s multi-layered defense array, which is developed by the Israel Missile Defense Organization in the Israel Ministry of Defense. This defense array consists of four layers: the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 weapon systems. The success of this test represents an important milestone in the operational capabilities of the State of Israel in defending itself against current and future threats.
The most serious threat to Israel from ballistic missiles is from Iran who is developing different types of long range ballistic missiles, some that are capable to carry a nuclear warhead.
