Qatar Airways and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have reaffirmed their commitment to aiding the most vulnerable refugees and internally displaced persons globally through the extension of their partnership. The renewal of this collaboration was formally announced during a signing ceremony attended by key representatives, including Qatar Airways Group CEO, Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, and the UN agency, Filippo Grandi, along with notable figures from both entities.
Badr Mohammed Al-Meer highlighted the continuation of the Qatar Airways Group and UNHCR alliance, emphasising their joint efforts to provide crucial humanitarian aid to those in need worldwide. Over the past two years, Qatar Airways Cargo has worked closely with UNHCR, contributing significantly to improving the livelihoods of individuals across the globe. As part of this renewed commitment, Qatar Airways pledges an additional 400 tonnes of free tonnage to facilitate the delivery of essential aid supplies by UNHCR.
The collaboration leverages Qatar Airways' extensive hub-and-spoke network from Hamad International Airport, recognised as the 'World's Best Airport' at the recent Skytrax Airport Awards. Bolstered by the airline's status as the largest global air cargo operator, with a fleet of 28 freighters and access to over 200 passenger aircraft, serving 70 freighter destinations and more than 170 belly-hold destinations, Qatar Airways remains steadfast in its support for humanitarian causes.
“We are proud of what we have accomplished through our relationship with UNHCR over the past four years, which has helped support displaced communities around the world,” said Badr Mohammed Al-Meer Qatar Airways Group CEO in the company’s press release on Monday (Apr. 29).
“We look forward to the significant renewal of our partnership and in continuing to aid those who are most vulnerable. Qatar Airways Group is committed to fulfilling its humanitarian role by helping refugees and internally displaced people worldwide,” he added.
“We highly appreciate this vital partnership and are proud to renew it for two additional years, which reflects Qatar Airways’ solid commitment towards supporting our humanitarian efforts, in terms of delivering essential relief items to those most in need,” said Ahmed Mohsen, UNHCR’s Representative to the State of Qatar.
“Since establishing our partnership with Qatar Airways in May 2020, amid a critical time during the emergence of COVID-19, Qatar Airways has lent us a helping hand to support refugees and displaced communities with vital relief items and medical supplies.”
Through this partnership, UNHCR gains vital access to deliver life-saving assistance, including water, medical care, and hygiene materials, ensuring the safety and well-being of refugees, internally displaced persons, and host communities worldwide.
