The European Commission has chosen a consortium led by Naval Group Belgium to spearhead the European Extended Mine Countermeasures (E=MCM) project. This initiative, funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF), will be directed by Naval Group Belgium, a subsidiary of Naval Group, over the next three years. Building on the successful completion of the MIRICLE project at the end of 2023, 21 European partners will collaborate to develop a sovereign European capability in mine warfare.
With maritime mine threats posing significant risks to both civil and military naval sectors, European navies are bolstering their capacities to address these dangers across extensive maritime areas. The E=MCM project was proposed to the European Commission in response to a 2023 call from the European Defence Fund. Having been selected, the project is set to commence in the last quarter of 2024, continuing the progress initiated by the MIRICLE project towards next-generation, European-made countermeasure solutions, and supporting the broader European naval community.
The E=MCM project builds on the achievements of the MIRICLE project, which aims to establish next-generation mine countermeasures (MCM) platforms and toolbox technologies for enhanced operations. The objective of the E=MCM project is to address development gaps in these new capabilities (toolbox 2.0), providing faster, safer, and more resilient MCM operations. The project will involve designing, prototyping, and demonstrating a unified system-of-systems architecture featuring scalable unmanned autonomous toolboxes, as well as intelligent platforms and decision-support tools, to counter drifting, tethered, and buried mines.
The ultimate goal of E=MCM is to deliver new MCM capability prototypes that are ready for industrialization within the European Union.
The consortium involved in the E=MCM project comprises 21 beneficiaries from 11 European countries:
