Altair and JetZero have partnered to advance the development of a commercial blended wing aircraft. JetZero aims to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 50% through the aircraft’s design. The blended wing body integrates the wings with the fuselage, improving aerodynamics, increasing interior space, and reducing noise. The aircraft is expected to enter commercial service in 2030, with a full-scale flight planned for 2027.
JetZero is using Altair FlightStream, part of the Altair HyperWorks design and simulation platform, to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. This technology allows for faster early-stage design iterations and aerodynamic studies while minimising computational costs. "JetZero uses Altair technology because it helps us deliver on our mission of making the biggest leap forward in aviation since the dawn of the jet age," said Tom O'Leary, co-founder and chief executive officer of JetZero. He added that the company’s Z4 aircraft is "inevitable" and that Altair's tools are integral to its development.
Altair's solutions support JetZero in bridging the gap between CFD simulation and engineering, helping to address aerodynamic and structural design challenges efficiently. "Altair is delighted that JetZero, a true pioneer in the world of aerospace today, is leveraging our simulation and AI technology to push limits in airplane design," said Pietro Cervellera, Altair’s senior vice president of aerospace and defence. He stated that both companies share the vision of a more efficient and sustainable aerospace industry.
JetZero is also a member of the Altair Aerospace Startup Acceleration Program (ASAP), which provides access to Altair’s simulation, data analytics, and AI tools. The company is working alongside the US Air Force, NASA, and the FAA to advance blended wing technology.
Altair develops software and cloud solutions in simulation, high-performance computing, data analytics, and AI, supporting various industries in optimising performance and sustainability.
