AirAsia Expands Operations to Subang Airport

Our Bureau - : Jul 23, 2024 - : 11:02 pm

AirAsia has announced the expansion of its operations in Malaysia to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (LTSAAS), also known as Subang Airport. This move enhances its connectivity and capacity, reinforcing its position as the nation’s largest airline.

Complementing its main hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Terminal 2), the new operations at Subang Airport offer travellers additional connectivity and a more convenient option due to the airport’s proximity to the city.

Starting 30 August 2024, AirAsia will operate 14 weekly flights to two domestic destinations, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, from Subang Airport. This marks a significant milestone for the airline and the revitalisation of Subang Airport.

“Subang Airport holds a special place in my heart, and it is exciting to witness its resurgence as one of the key players in Malaysia’s aviation landscape,” said Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor to AirAsia Aviation Group.

“The government’s decision to revitalise the airport into a regional aviation hub aligns perfectly with our mission to continue revolutionising the aviation industry as the increased air traffic and passenger flow generated by our operations will have multiplier effects on related industries, driving economic growth and development in the region.”

AirAsia’s homecoming to Subang Airport is not just nostalgic but also strategic. Capital A’s engineering arm, Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), has operations based there, enhancing the efficiency and streamlining of our aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities. Repainting Subang Airport red symbolises not just a return to our roots, but a commitment to our growth journey and contribution to the prosperity of the communities we serve. This is a step in the right direction for the nation’s aviation industry, and we are thrilled to lead this visionary move,” he added.

Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, Managing Director of AirAsia Malaysia, commented: “The decision to operate at Subang Airport as our second home in Kuala Lumpur is driven by several compelling factors and opportunities. The airport’s location and proximity to the city centre and surrounding suburbs offer an optimal travel experience for guests in the vicinity. Moreover, its smaller size and lower passenger volume ensure a seamless journey for travellers, aligned with our commitment to enhancing the overall guest experience, while providing greater flexibility and choice, and fostering healthy competition in the nation’s aviation industry.

“The Subang Airport operation will boost AirAsia Malaysia’s domestic network from 920 flights weekly to 948 flights weekly with a total of 40 routes. This additional operation is expected to drive our next phase of growth, not just in Malaysia but across the region. We are eagerly anticipating the addition of more routes from Subang, especially international ones, which are currently in the planning stages and subject to regulatory approval. This will reinforce our vision of transforming Malaysia into a premier aviation hub. We are optimistic about making Subang our sixth hub in Malaysia in the near future, further bolstering our network and expanding our capacity to serve more destinations and guests.”
