AirAsia India Launch Delayed

: Dec 6, 2013 - : 9:06 am

New Delhi: Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia’s India venture will be delayed by a couple of months, a senior government official says.
The joint venture airline AirAsia India has been hoping to commence operations from December this year. The carrier had applied to India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for its scheduled operator’s permit (SOP) or the flying permit in September.
“They need to get the aircraft over and are presently seeking permission to import it,” DGCA’s Director General Arun Mishra says.
Although it’s difficult to say when the airline will start flying, Mishra says approval for the permit “should not take much time.” “We should be able to give the permit in the next two months” following which the airline can commence operations.
The aviation regulator will sanction the air operating permit after examining areas such as the aircraft requirement, airworthiness, safety measures, and maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities and, most importantly, an operation manual detailing the availability of manpower to operate flights as well as on the ground, parking space at airports and engineering facilities.
The DGCA official says the Malaysian airline has plans to do most of the training for its employees in Malaysia.
“So, we need to go there and certify that,” he adds.
AirAsia announced plans to invest $30 million to start a low-cost airline in India through a partnership with local investors – the Tata Group and Arun Bhatia’s Telestra Tradeplace – in July. The airline got permission from India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board to invest 800 million rupees ($13.4 million) in the new airline in March and it received the no-objection certificate from the civil aviation ministry in September.
AirAsia plans to start operations in the country with three Airbus-320 aircraft initially and hopes to add 10 Airbus aircraft each year to boost its operations in the country. The airline has currently 200 employees, including pilots, engineers and ground staff.
The joint venture is expected to operate from Chennai, in southern India, and focus on providing domestic Tier 2/Tier 3 city connections to Indian travelers.
