AirAsia Malaysia has announced the resumption of services from Kuala Lumpur to Pattaya, Thailand, starting from June 17, 2024, with thrice-weekly flights on Tuesday (Mar. 12).
This move marks the reinstatement of the airline’s ninth direct route to Thailand from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang post-pandemic, following destinations such as Bangkok (Don Mueang International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport), Krabi, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Hatyai. It coincides with the recent launch of AirAsia’s ‘Takeover Thailand’ campaign, aimed at promoting Thailand as the preferred travel destination for travellers from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and beyond.
As the eighth largest city in Thailand, Pattaya has always been a popular tourism destination, attracting both domestic and international travellers with its diverse attractions, including the pristine shores of Koh Larn and the bustling Pattaya Floating Market. In 2019, AirAsia served over 60,000 travellers between Kuala Lumpur and Pattaya.
“We are pleased to announce the resumption of services to the East Coast of the Gulf of Thailand, providing the only direct connectivity from Kuala Lumpur to the city,” said Bo Lingam, CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group. “This addition to our vast network in Thailand underscores our continued commitment to making travel more accessible to second-tier cities such as Pattaya.”
“With approximately 2.7 million guests flying from Malaysia to Thailand throughout 2023, we firmly believe that the return of this popular route will boost the number of travellers to and from Thailand this year, further making our ‘Takeover Thailand’ campaign a success.”
On another front, AirAsia Malaysia also celebrated the launch of its inaugural services from Kuala Lumpur to Perth, Western Australia, with the first flight touching down at Perth Airport last night at 7:50 pm.
These additional daily services between Malaysia and Western Australia mark AirAsia Malaysia’s first-ever route to Australia, doubling the number of flights on this popular route from seven to 14 weekly. This expansion adds over 3,000 additional visitor seats weekly through Perth Airport.
The new daily flights complement existing daily services on AirAsia X between Kuala Lumpur and Perth, which already offer over 5,200 visitor seats weekly on larger A330 widebody aircraft.
“AirAsia Malaysia is thrilled to launch its first-ever route to Australia. Perth is an incredibly popular destination for our guests for leisure, visiting friends and family, education and due to its close proximity to Southeast Asia – with Malaysia being a top five destination of origin last year,” said Bo Lingam. “Conversely, Asia is one of the most popular destinations of choice for West Australians for affordable and unique, culturally diverse travel experiences,”
“We are confident these new services operated by AirAsia Malaysia will be popular – our inaugural flight to Perth was 95% full which is a great sign of things to come. Thanks to the addition of new model aircraft like the A321neo with longer-range capabilities and numerous operational efficiency, we are able to make these new services a reality on a narrowbody aircraft from Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
“Malaysia is Western Australia’s fourth biggest international visitor market, injecting $99 million into the WA economy in visitor expenditure for the year ending in September 2023,” said Kate Holsgrove, Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer of Perth Airport. “We’ve got strong business, education, trade and tourism links with Malaysia and this new non-stop service provides further opportunities by adding more than 170,000 new seats annually to the Perth market. We look forward to building a strong partnership with AirAsia Malaysia, to ensure the success of this service.”
