Airbus said it is sticking to its target of 800 aircraft deliveries this year, despite problems with getting timely delivery of new fuel-efficient engines for its A320neo jets.
“We’re sticking to our target of delivering 800 jets this year,” AFP quoted a spokesman for the France-based plane maker.
Earlier a Bloomberg report stated that Airbus will miss its delivery target for 2018, due to the setbacks in the supply of engines by Pratt & Whitney, which are being fitted into nearly half of the A320neo narrow-body jets.
As per earlier reports there was a possibility that Airbus expected to deliver 30 to 40 fewer of the aircraft than previously anticipated and the only way it could get closer to its target of handing over about 210 of the Pratt-powered jets if P&W could accelerate engine production beyond current levels.
The report sent Airbus shares into a tailspin on the Paris stock exchange on Monday, where they fell nearly three percent at the opening.
The plane maker currently aims to produce 63 A320neo jets a month from now through to the second half of 2019.
In 2017, Airbus delivered a record 718 planes, exceeding the target of 700. In 2016 too, they exceeded their objective with 688 planes deliveries.
in early June, Airbus had said that it expected higher costs to manage delivery of scores of aircraft that were parked without engines after the latest issue with a knife-edge seal on the high-tech engine, one of several in a new generation of fuel-saving power plants that have suffered through persistent teething pains. At the time, commercial-aircraft chief Guillaume Faury called the situation “challenging” but said that “if the engine manufacturers stick to their plans, we will stick to ours or very close”.
The company can even meet its target for deliveries of the A320 family of planes by picking up the slack with other models, including the A320ceo. That variant is less expensive than the more fuel-efficient neo, which stands for new engine option, reported Bloomberg.
