Boeing has “recommended” to 16 customers that they address a potential electrical issue in a specific group of 737 Max airplanes prior to further operations.
“We are working closely with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on this production issue. We are also informing our customers of specific tail numbers affected and we will provide direction on appropriate corrective actions,” Boeing said in a statement.
According to the company, the issue is not related to the flight control software system that reportedly caused the two crashes that killed 346 people. The aircraft was cleared to fly again in November last year after being grounded for about 20 months following the crashes.
According to the FAA, the new problem is one that “could affect the operation of a backup power control unit” in newly manufactured 737 Max jets. The problem apparently resulted from changes in the production process at Boeing.
While Southwest Airlines has said that the issue affects 30 jets in its fleet, United Airlines says that the problem affects 16 of its 30 Max planes. “We are working to swap out aircraft to minimize the impact to our customers,” the company said. “We are in communication with Boeing to understand the timeline for returning the aircraft safely to our fleet. We do not have an estimate right now.”
None of the Max jets that American Airlines had in its fleet before the global grounding of the aircraft in March 2019 have been affected by the problem. However, the issue does concern 17 Max jets that were delivered to the airline since November. last year.
