Anduril Australia Reveals Ghost Shark Underwater Drone

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Dec 16, 2022 - : 7:03 pm

Anduril Australia, a subsidiary of an American defense company Anduril Industries Inc., revealed “Ghost Shark” as the name of a new underwater drone under development for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in Sydney on Monday (Dec. 12). The event also introduced a “DIVE-LD” testbed vehicle for the development of the drone also known as “autonomous robotic undersea warfare vehicle”.

The program is the result of a collaboration between the company, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), and the Australian Department of Defence’s Defence Science and Technology Group.

“They have the capacity to remain at sea undetected for very long periods, carry various military payloads and cover very long distances,” said the RAN’s Head of Navy Capability Rear Admiral Peter Quinn. “The vessels will provide militaries with a persistent option for the delivery of underwater effects in high-risk environments, complementing our existing crewed ships and submarines, as well as other future uncrewed surface vessels,” he added.

The collaboration for the development of the Ghost Shark was first announced in May this year which stated that the Anduril Industries and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are “entering into commercial negotiations for a US$100m co-funded design, development, and manufacturing program for Extra Large Autonomous Undersea Vehicles (XL-AUVs) for the Royal Australian Navy.”

The May announcement also noted that the development program will take three years and will produce three prototypes in this time span. With an aim to produce an affordable, autonomous, long-endurance, multi-mission capable underwater drone, the Ghost Shark is designed to be “modular, customizable and can be optimized with a variety of payloads for a wide range of military and non-military missions.”
