The Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Badan Keamanan Laut / Bakamla) and representatives from the United States (U.S.) inaugurated the “Anambas” Maritime Training Center building on Monday (Jan. 29). Located at the Southern entrance of the Strait of Malacca in Batam island, Riau Islands province, the event symbolizes a collaborative effort between the agency and the U.S. to enhance the security and safety of Indonesian waters.

According to Vice Admiral Irvansyah, Head of Bakamla, the inauguration underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to creating safe maritime conditions in Indonesia. The Anambas training center, he notes, aligns with the agency‘s vision and mission, particularly in establishing a coast guard educational unit or academy.

The U.S. ChargĂ© d’Affaires ad interim, Michael F. Kleine, expressed optimism about the future of maritime cooperation between the two nations. He highlighted various areas of collaboration, including programs aimed at protecting coastal and fishing communities, advancing science and technology in the maritime sector, and supporting port development initiatives.

Funded by the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), the Anambas Maritime Training Center represents a substantial investment, totaling IDR 79 billion or approximately USD 5 million. The facility features six classrooms, conference rooms, dormitories, offices, and simulators.

The inauguration of the Anambas Maritime Training Center signifies a significant step forward in maritime security and cooperation between Indonesia and the United States. The center is expected to play a crucial role in training and educating Bakamla personnel, enhancing capabilities, and fostering collaboration in the maritime domain.

Overall, the event reflects the shared commitment of both nations to promote security, safety, and cooperation in the maritime domain, ultimately contributing to the prosperity and well-being of the region.
