Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport Doubles Capacity with New Terminal

Atul Chandra - : Nov 11, 2022 - : 5:14 pm

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has inaugurated the new Terminal 2 of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. The new terminal will double Kempegowda International Airport’s passenger capacity to approximately 25 million passengers per annum from its existing capacity of 5-6 million.

Prime Minister Modi said Kempegowda International Airport’s Terminal 2 gives impetus to airport capacity expansion and boosts commerce. “I am pleased that the terminal building gives utmost importance to sustainability,” he said.

The 255,000 square-meter Terminal 2 is considered as one-of-its kind in the world in terms of design, features and amenities. It will be a ‘Terminal as a Garden’ — making BLR Airport a natural extension of Bengaluru’s much-heralded green aesthetics.

Every passageway throughout Terminal 2 connects travellers with nature. Trees, small gardens, and ponds featuring local and exotic species of plants line the interior. Planted bells will hang from the ceiling at the entrance, check-in, and security. The new terminal also features a large indoor garden featuring rammed-earth walls and waterfalls will provide a gateway into the densely landscaped retail space.

The new terminal has been constructed at a cost of approximately USD650 million.
