French water treatment company BIO-UV Group has dispatched a second BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system to the United States for trials to evaluate its suitability for US Navy vessels.
The newly shipped "M" series BIO-SEA unit will undergo the same testing as the compact "B" series system, which was previously delivered to The Columbia Group (TCG), BIO-UV Group’s partner in the US. TCG was awarded a contract in 2021 to develop a reinforced version of the BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system, which has been approved by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
The BIO-SEA M Series, designed specifically for the US Navy, passed Factory Acceptance Tests in April 2024 at BIO-UV Group’s facility in Lunel, France. Meanwhile, the BIO-SEA B unit, installed in February 2024, has undergone over 500 hours of ballasting and deballasting operations during pier-side trials on a logistics vessel. It is currently undergoing land-based electromagnetic interference testing to assess compliance with US military standards, with further vibration and shock tests planned.
“We aim to have completed operational and environmental testing for both units by 2026,” said Simon Marshall, BIO-UV Group’s Deputy Managing Director. “Should all tests pass the US Navy’s compatibility criteria, this will be the first step toward our system achieving Navy certifiable status and the objective of manufacturing units in North America.”
The initiative is part of a US Government programme to identify a suitable ballast water treatment system for US Navy vessels. BIO-UV Group and TCG have collaborated to develop solutions tailored to this requirement.
The BIO-SEA B unit is a compact ballast water treatment system that combines filtration and ultraviolet (UV) technology, with a capacity to process up to 300m³ per hour. The larger M10 system has been designed to treat flow rates of up to 1,000m³ per hour.
