Bombardier to Focus More on Regional Jets

: Nov 6, 2018 - : 4:15 pm

With the rising demand for regional jets and a recent surge in Q400 sales, Bombardier aims to strongly focus on the regional aircraft market.

“We are giving more push to our regional jet programme and the aircraft we are producing today is a very different product than we delivered years ago,” a senior executive of Bombardier says. “Our CRJs, even without engine upgrades, remain efficient and competitive – particularly in countries like China and India.”

According to Bombardier’s latest fleet forecast, airlines worldwide will need 5,750 aircraft in the 60- to 100-seat range in the next 20 years, with North American carriers set to take the lion’s share in the form of 1,400 aircraft. “We also expect a huge demand from airlines in the Asia-Pacific region,” says the executive. The 60- to 100-seat segment includes Q400s and the CRJ NextGen line-up of CRJ700s, CRJ900s and CRJ1000s.

There has been a surge in sales of regional jets. Bombardier has about doubled its Q400 backlog in one year, with orders from Ethiopian Airlines, Philippine Airlines, India’s SpiceJet, a company affiliated with TAAG Angola Airlines and others. American Airlines recently bought 15 CRJ900s and Delta Air Lines ordered 20 CRJ900s. “Our backlogs are getting stronger and stronger. We see a very bright future for both the Q400 and the CRJ,” the executive informs.

Asia is quite promising as a future growth market for regional airlines, with China especially having tremendous long-term market potential.

“We really hope that China will give us credit for our well-established aircraft, and also realise that we don’t just make airplanes, we develop regions as well,” the company official says.

The company last year unveiled the Atmosphere CRJ cabin, which has larger overhead bins, entranceways and lavatories, and LED lighting and in-seat power – aimed at making the cabin more comfortable.

Bombardier unveiled the mockup of its new Atmosphere cabin for the first time in Asia at the Airshow China 2018, highlighting a series of upgrades aimed at propelling the venerable regional jet into its next chapter.

A 70-seat CRJ900 Bombardier regional jet delivered to Delta recently will be the first to feature Bombardier’s new cabin design. The new Atmosphere cabin will set new standards of passenger experience in the regional jet market segment, the company official says. Key features of the new interior are comprised of larger passenger living space, wheel-first roller bag capability, a more spacious lavatory, increased cabin connectivity options, all integrated in a contemporary design and material choices. The new design allows each passenger to carry and store an ‘oversized’ roller bag within the aircraft cabin bins which minimizes the need to check bags at the counter or the gate.
