Czech Republic Orders Additional Leopard 2A4 Tanks

Our Bureau - : Dec 12, 2024 - : 12:02 am

The Czech Republic has signed a contract with Rheinmetall for the delivery of 14 Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks. The agreement was signed by Dr. Björn Bernhard, CEO of Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, and Lubor Koudelka, Director General of the Armaments and Acquisition Division of the Czech Ministry of Defence.

The contract, funded by the Czech government, includes a comprehensive ammunition and logistics package alongside the tank deliveries. Valued at approximately €161 million, it will see the delivery of 14 refurbished Leopard 2A4 tanks by the end of 2026. These tanks will mainly come from former Swiss stock and will be modified to meet Czech specifications.

This new deal builds on two existing ring swap agreements, where the Czech armed forces received Leopard 2A4 tanks in exchange for older equipment supplied to the Ukrainian forces.

The included ammunition and logistics support aim to ensure the operational readiness of the fleet, which will eventually include 42 tanks and two Büffel 3 armoured recovery vehicles. This procurement is part of the Czech Republic’s broader effort to fully transition the 73rd armoured battalion from Soviet-origin tanks to German-made Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks.
