FatHopes Energy Sdn Bhd (FHE), a Malaysian biofuel feedstock aggregator, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Denmark-based Topsoe to explore the development of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) refinery in Malaysia.
The proposed facility would use renewable feedstocks, such as used cooking oil (UCO) and other waste-based oils, to produce aviation biofuels aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
Under the agreement, Topsoe will contribute its technology, including catalyst solutions and engineering expertise, to assess the feasibility of the project. The initial phase will focus on a feasibility study evaluating Malaysia as a suitable location for the refinery, in line with global sustainability objectives.
FHE will utilise its feedstock aggregation network to secure a stable supply of raw materials. Once established, the facility could be operated by FHE or licensed to a third party.
The announcement comes ahead of the 36th Palm & Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference & Exhibition (POC2025) in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia, one of the world’s largest palm oil producers, is positioning itself in SAF development as part of broader efforts to reduce aviation emissions. The project could help meet domestic SAF demand while supporting the country’s transition to sustainable energy. The potential use of palm oil-related materials, including palm oil mill effluent (POME), as SAF feedstock would be subject to sustainability certifications based on jurisdictional requirements.
