With Vietnam placing a growing emphasis on the defence and security of its maritime expanse, the Vietnamese Coast Guard has several modernisation initiatives underway.
According to a representative of OSI Maritime - a company specializing in providing navigational information and navigation systems for Canadian warships and submarines said: "Currently, the Vietnamese Coast Guard is still using paper charts, hand-drawn while the navy uses electronic maps. Coming to the exhibition, OSI Maritime had an official meeting with the Vietnam Coast Guard. Hopefully in the near future, the parties will decide on a cooperation."
Similarly, the German company Elac Sonar brought to the exhibition Sphere equipment for surveillance, mine and collision avoidance, communication and underwater measurement. The product is being used by the Vietnamese navy. Under ideal conditions, the Elac Sonar can detect targets as far away as 30km.
Vietnam has a long but narrow mainland and a long coastline with 28/63 coastal provinces and cities, accounting for 42 per cent of the land area and 45 per cent of the total population. As a result the modernisation of the Vietnamese Coast Guard is a key priority.
