Safran Electronics & Defense has secured a contract from the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) to supply Multi-Mission Parachutes to the French Army. The contract follows over a year of technical and commercial preparations by Safran teams in Massy and Joué-lès-Tours, France.
“Securing this type of contract is a long and demanding process – one that took over a year of work,” said François Viviande, Programme Manager, and Pierre Lasarte, Parachute Systems Sales Development Manager at Safran Electronics & Defense.
Safran's expertise in parachute systems originates from Zodiac Aerospace, which acquired the French parachute manufacturer Aerazur EFA in 1978. Safran Electronics & Defense took over the activity in 2020 and now provides a range of parachutes for personnel, air delivery, aircraft braking, and emergency evacuation.
The Multi-Mission Parachute builds on the Parachute Landing System (SMT), which was developed under a 2016 contract and has been in use as a tactical single-seater parachute. It was designed to support heavily equipped operational parachutists in complex infiltration missions. The Multi-Mission Parachute serves as a tandem version of the system. “Developed on the basis of a Parachute Landing System, it will be adopted by the forces as a new tandem parachute for the French Army,” said Viviande and Lasarte.
The system retains the same performance and certification level as the Parachute Landing System while improving manoeuvrability, drift capability, and precision. It supports a maximum drop altitude of 9,000 metres, allowing for high-altitude insertion with oxygen. “This operational parachuting technique is used to deploy parachutes at high altitude, preferably at night, and infiltrate several dozen kilometres as a team, thus allowing to discreetly reach a landing zone before initiating a tactical mission on the ground,” Viviande explained.
With a load capacity of 300 kg, the Multi-Mission Parachute can carry 100 kg more than its predecessor. “The two-seater design is a major asset, allowing to transport personnel who are not parachute-qualified, such as a combat medic, or essential equipment for ground operations, including specialised gear,” said Viviande and Lasarte.
The parachute features Phantom canopies for both main and reserve chutes, enhancing performance for covert operations. It provides a flight range of approximately 50 km from the drop point, improving mission flexibility.
