India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed 10 contracts worth Rupees 55 billion Crores with state-owned defence firm Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
BEL will supply the IAF with 90 EW suites for its medium lift helicopters. The EW suites have been indigenously designed and developed by the DRDO lab, Combat Aircraft Systems Development & Integration Centre (CASDIC). It comprises Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) and Counter Measure Dispensing System (CMDS).
An MoD official said, the new EW suites will significantly enhance the combat-survivability of IAF helicopters while undertaking operational missions against adversaries — ground-based as well as airborne radars and heat-seeking, shoulder-fired missiles with effective countermeasures.
BEL has also obtained a maintenance contract for two Akash SAM squadrons. The Akash Missile System is a medium-range, surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, developed by DRDO and manufactured by BEL. The SAM system is supplied with a Surveillance Radar, Fire Control Radar, Control and Command Centre developed by BEL. The Akash Missile system can target aircraft up to 30 km away.
For the Indian Army, BEL will supply an Automated Air Defence Control & Reporting System (Project Akashteer). This system will enable monitoring of low-level airspace over the battle areas of Indian Army and effectively control the Ground-Based Air Defence Weapon Systems. BEL has also obtained an order for Instant Fire Detection and Suppressing Systems (IFDSS) for T-72 MBTs. The IFDSS has been indigenously designed by DRDO and will be manufactured by BEL.
BEL will supply 1265 portable Software Defined Radios (SDR) to the Indian Navy. According to company officials, the state-of-the-art radios have been indigenously developed, jointly by the DRDO and BEL and are available in three configurations viz. SDR Manpack, SDR Fixed Pack and SDR hand-held, to meet the specific operational requirements of the Indian Navy. These new generation SDRs supports multi band, multi-channel, multi role/ mission operation with voice/data to meet the needs of network-centric warfare of Indian Navy.
BEL will also supply 1178 HDVLF HF receivers to the Navy. The communication equipment is designed to receive and demodulate Data/Voice in VLF and HF Band of operation in Navy ships and submarines. A company official stated that the equipment incorporates advanced DSP technology with inbuilt high grade encryption. BEL has productionised the equipment under with ToT from the DRDO.
BEL will also supply 12 units of the Sarang ESM system which will be installed on Kamov 31 Helicopters of the Indian Navy. The ESM system intercepts, detects and identifies radar emitters comprising state-of-the-art technologies. The project is indigenously designed and developed by DLRL and manufactured by BEL-Hyderabad. BEL will also supply Combat Management Systems for Navy P17 and P28 warships and has also been contracted for the Varuna EW system.
