Indonesia Finalizes Third Tranche for 18 Rafale F4 Fighters

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jan 9, 2024 - : 4:01 am

Following the first and second tranches for six and 18 Rafale F4 jet fighters in September 2022 and August 2023, Indonesia has now finalized the third and final tranche for another 18 – bringing the fully confirmed order of the French-made 4.5th generation jet fighter to 42 aircraft for this Southeast Asian country.

“In choosing the Rafale, Indonesia has opted for a unique tool for sovereignty and operational independence that will help consolidate its role as a major regional power,” said Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation in an official press release on Monday (8 Jan.). “This choice also consolidates ambitious industrial and academic cooperations. We are fully committed to making this partnership a success, with a resolutely long-term vision,” he added.

The activation of the final tranche for 42 Dassault Rafale F4 fighters comes after the postponement of a controversial plan from the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Kementerian Pertahanan / Kemhan) to acquire 12 ex-Qatari Mirage 2000-5 jets last week. According to Kemhan, the plan was meant to fill the gap in the Indonesian Air Force’s jet fighter fleets while waiting for the Rafale to arrive.

Citing the unavailability of funds for the acquisition, Kemhan spokesperson Dahnil Simanjuntak further elaborated that the ministry will focus on optimizing the Indonesian Air Force’s F-16 and Su-27/30 retrofit programs instead.

With a total contract value of around EUR8.1 billion (approx. USD8.8 billion), the Indonesian order for 42 Rafale F4 fighters consists of 30 single-seaters and 12 dual-seater aircraft. While the contract also includes weapons, two simulators, and related support packages, It is currently unknown what types of weapons and in how many quantities are included.

However, it has been noted that the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) is highly interested in French-made Hammer air-to-ground missiles as well as MBDA Meteor Beyond-Visual-Range (BVR) air-to-air missiles. There are also some indications that some of the Rafale’s weaponry will also be made in Indonesia under license.

With the finalization of the third tranche, TNI-AU is expecting the first Rafale F4 aircraft to be delivered in early 2026.
