Indonesia Postpones Ex-Qatari Mirage 2000-5 Fighters Acquisition

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jan 2, 2024 - : 11:52 pm

The Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Kementerian Pertahanan / Kemhan) has postponed its plan to acquire 12 Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) for the Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Udara / TNI-AU). The decision was revealed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Dahnil Simanjuntak in Jakarta on Monday (Jan. 1).

Citing the unavailability of funds for the acquisition, he further elaborated that Kemhan will take measures to optimize the retrofit programs for the existing TNI-AU fighter jets such as the F-16 and the Sukhoi Su-27/30.

Kemhan has previously stated its interest in acquiring ex-Qatari Mirage 2000-5 jets to boost the nation’s air defense. The jets were meant to fill the role of interim fighters while TNI-AU is waiting for the delivery of the Dassault Rafale fighters from France. However, the 11.83 Trillion IDR (733 Million EUR) plan for these second-hand jets has caused some controversies among both the Indonesian military observers and the parliament.

This was because the Mirage 2000-5 acquisition plan carries a risk of violating the Indonesian Defense Industry’s law that has already been put into effect since 2012. This law mandates that each defense acquisition from abroad must also include offsets, local contents, and several other requirements.

Moreover, there are also concerns regarding the availability of spare parts due to Dassault Aviation of France, as the original maker of the Mirage 2000-5, has shut down the production line of the aircraft since 2007.
