The Indonesian Ministry of Defence has begun construction on the first of two new 70 m Fast Missile Craft or KCR-70M in partnership with Turkiye’s TAIS Shipyards, with the project officially launched at a steel-cutting ceremony on Wednesday (Oct. 30) at Sefine Shipyard in Turkiye.
Known also in Indonesia as “KCR-Full Combat Mission”, the project is based on TAIS’s FACM-70 design and is part of Indonesia’s broader strategy to strengthen its maritime defences. Once the construction stages are complete, the ship will undergo delivery and operational trials before its official handover to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, and later, to the Indonesian Navy for deployment.
During the ceremony, Admiral Retiono Kunto, Special Staff to the Chief of the Indonesian Navy, delivered remarks on behalf of the Head of the Defence Facilities Agency. “I am confident in TAIS Shipyard’s capability to construct this KCR-Full Combat Mission vessel to high quality standards and to complete it within the designated time frame,” he stated.
The specifications for the vessels in the KCR-70M class include a length of 70 metres, a maximum beam of 11.8 metres, a draught of 2.85 metres, and a displacement of 850 tonnes. They will have a top speed of 40 knots, a cruising speed of 20 knots, a 7-day endurance, and a maximum range of 1,600 nautical miles. Planned weaponry for each vessel includes a 76mm main gun, two quadruple Atmaca anti-ship missile launchers, Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), and two 12.7mm machine guns.
