The Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Udara / TNI-AU) will hold an official event to retire all of its SA330 Puma helicopters after 45 years of service. The event will be held at Atang Sendjaja airbase in Bogor, West Java on Friday, 29 December 2023.
TNI-AU received its first batch of six SA330J helicopters in 1978 with the second batch of five more arriving in 1980. In 1982, TNI-AU received five license-built Puma helicopters from the state-owned Industri Pesawat Terbang Nusantara (IPTN, now PT Dirgantara Indonesia / PTDI) with an additional two more in 1985 to be configured as VIP transport versions.
The Skadron Udara 8 (Air Squadron 8) based in Atang Sendjajda airbase, is the home base of all of the SA330 Puma helicopters operated by the Indonesian Air Force. During their service, at least five were lost to accidents.
To replace the remaining SA330 Puma helicopters, the squadron is currently in the process of re-equipping itself with H225M Super Cougar long-range tactical transport helicopters.
First developed in 1963 by Aerospatiale - a French state-owned aerospace company that was merged with other European aerospace and defense companies to become Airbus - the first SA330 Puma helicopter prototype took flight in 1965 followed by the first flight of the production version in 1968. In 1969, the French Army became the first operator of the SA330 Puma. With a total production of 697 units, the aircraft have served or still serving in the air forces and armies of over 35 countries.
