Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, officiated the delivery and commissioning of two locally manufactured Dorang-class warships, KRI Hampala-880 and KRI Lumba-Lumba-881, during a ceremony held at the Sunda Kelapa Pier, North Jakarta, on Tuesday, 17 December.
“The construction of these vessels reflects the success of collaboration with the national defence industry. I hope domestic shipyards will continue to innovate and enhance their capacity, reducing dependence on foreign products and strengthening the nation’s self-reliance in the defence sector,” he remarked.
Launched in July 2024, the two vessels will be deployed to Patrol Vessel Units under Naval Bases XI in Merauke and XIII in Tarakan, respectively, to support operations in their designated regions.
Also known as the PC 60-class, these two Dorang-class vessels measure 61.20 metres in length and 8.50 metres in width, powered by two MTU 20V 4000 M73L engines capable of 2050 RPM and 3600 kW. They can reach a maximum speed of 24 knots and maintain a cruising speed of 17 knots. These characteristics enable the ships to perform a range of missions, including maritime law enforcement, infiltration and exfiltration operations, and search and rescue (SAR) activities.
The vessels are equipped with a 40 mm OTO Marlin ILOS main gun and two 12.7 mm caliber machine guns. These armaments support operations in various maritime conditions and terrains.
The names of the new Dorang-class ships were chosen to reflect their attributes. “Hampala”, named after a freshwater fish, symbolises strength and perseverance, while “Lumba-Lumba” (dolphin) conveys agility, intelligence, and adept navigation in marine environments. These characteristics are intended to enhance the vessels' ability to safeguard Indonesian waters.
Admiral Muhammad Ali emphasised the significance of the new vessels in the Navy's ongoing modernisation efforts. He also expressed hope for the ships’ effectiveness in their operational duties. “With their new condition, it is hoped they will uphold sovereignty and enforce law throughout Indonesian waters, especially within their respective operational areas,” he said.
