The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) is planning a procurement program for interim submarines to augment its fleet while awaiting the completion of work on two Scorpene class submarines.
Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, disclosed this plan to journalists during the international seminar “Future Submarine” held in Jakarta on Tuesday (May 14).
“It will take 5 to 7 years to construct these Scorpene submarines. Therefore, we need an interim solution,” he stated, as reported by the Indonesian national news agency, Antara.
As previously noted, the Indonesian Navy is currently awaiting the commencement and conclusion of work on two “Scorpene Evolved” class submarines, which will be undertaken at the PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya in collaboration with Naval Group from France.
The acquisition of interim submarines may be sourced from countries beyond France, including Germany, Italy, China, or the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“We have the option to procure from various sources, as stated by the Defence Minister, given our substantial submarine requirements,” he remarked.
Regarding the envisioned number of submarines to fortify the Indonesian Navy, he mentioned:
“The optimal number was thought to be around 12. We had 12 submarines during the tenure of President Soekarno’s government. In the future, we may aim for a fleet of 12 submarines along with smaller submarine variants or unmanned systems,” he concluded.
Presently, the Indonesian Navy operates four submarines: the Type 209 submarine KRI Cakra (401), acquired from West Germany in the 1980s, and three Jang Bogo class submarines from South Korea: KRI Nagapasa (403), KRI Ardadedali (404), and KRI Alugoro (405).
